Allegations that Raičević "was brutally beaten" by police are untrue

Podgorica, Montenegro (17 October 2015) -- Regarding the comments in the media relating to the detention of a journalist of the daily Dan Dražen Živković and editor at the IN4S new website Gojko Raičević, and allegations that Raičević "was brutally beaten" by the police, the Police Authority of Montenegro has issued the following statement:

Živković and Raičević, as well as other protesters, were detained because they have repeatedly defied the police orders issued at the venue where the municipal police together with police officers were trying to enforce the decision on dismantling the camp set up by the protesters. Being journalists is not linked to their apprehension. They were detained as the citizens attending the public gathering and breaking the law.

It is incorrect that Gojko Raičević "was brutally beaten" inside a police vehicle. As it was already stated, during the arrest of 11 people, including Raičevič, police officers were using coercive means in line with the law. Before bringing him to the magistrates’ court, Raičević was given medical treatment in a medical facility where minor injuries were ascertained. After that, Raičević was brought to the magistrates’ court due to the violation of Article 12 of the Law on Public Peace an Order. After hearing, Raičević was released to defend himself from liberty.
