National Security Council discusses security situation in country

Podgorica, Montenegro (18 October 2015) – At its session held earlier today, the National Security Council, chaired by Prime Minister Milo Đukanović, discussed the current security situation in the country on the occasion of the long-lasting protests organised by the opposition Democratic Front.

The Council noted that during a 3-week opposition rally in Podgorica, and in particular after putting a ban on them, the organisers undertook certain activities that threatened the constitutional order, stability and security of the citizens and their property.

The Ministry of the Interior and Police Authority, as well as the local authorities, acted according to the law. The police exercised its powers due to unlawfull behaviour of protesters and their active resistance, the Council concluded.

The Council encourages all the state authorities to undertake decisive measures in protecting values of the Montenegrin democratic society, as well as the integrity and freedom of each citizen in line with the Constitution.

It also urges all political stakeholders to restore dialogue on the ongoing and all other political issues within the democratic institutions of the system.
