Podgorica, Montenegro (12 November 2015) – The first year of implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between the governments of Montenegro and the UK aimed at boosting cooperation between the two states’ institutions in criminal matters related to taxes and customs exceeded all expectations, the meeting between Deputy Prime Minister Duško Marković and Head of Intelligence at H.M. Revenue and Customs Euan Stewart emphasised earlier today.

DPM Marković thanked Mr Stewart for the UK’s continuing support in strengthening Montenegro’s capacities for the fight against crime and cigarettes smuggling. In that regard, he underlined the progress made in improving the normative and institutional framework, as well as the establishment of the Special State Prosecutor’s Office and specialised Police Department.

Montenegrin-British cooperation based on the Memorandum of Understanding has yielded significant results, Mr Stewart stressed, adding that there is enough space to boost collaboration even further, particularly in strengthening Montenegro’s capacities for conducting financial investigations and fight against cyber-crime.

The meeting was also attended by the UK Ambassador to Montenegro Ian Whitting.
