Defence Minister Pejanović-Đurišić participates in VII Forum of International Security "HALIFAX 2015"

Halifax, Canada (22 November 2015) -- Montenegro’s Defence Minister Milica Pejanović-Đurišić participated earlier today in the working session of the VII Forum of International Security “HALIFAX 2015,” which addressed the latest moves of Russia's foreign policy and respect for the established international rules and norms in order to develop a comprehensive strategy to avoid endangering the modern democratic system.

Minister Pejanović-Đurišić spoke about the challenges Montenegro faces when it comes to Euro-Atlantic integration. She pointed out that no one has the right to influence the legitimate and clearly proclaimed foreign policy goals of Montenegro. She said that Montenegro is committed to developing a society based on democratic principles, the rule of law and respect for human rights.

"Enthusiasm, dedication and constant efforts towards the democratisation of the Montenegrin society have resulted in achieving evident and measurable results, which will be primarily effectuated in early December when we receive a NATO invitation. The recently adopted Resolution in the Parliament of Montenegro testify to the fact that the process has been supported by the majority of the Montenegrin citizens and that no interference should be allowed," Minister Pejanović-Đurišić underlined.

She also took part in the session titled "From Athens to Brussels: Europe on the line," which stressed that all European countries have to pay particular attention to the security issue. It was emphasised that, in the current security conditions, the European Union must take a common position, and a reply to the issue of European citizens’ integration.

Minister Pejanović-Đurišić pointed out that the latest report by the European Commission recognises the progress Montenegro has made as a multicultural society.

"The experience in fostering tolerance and skills of establishing a dialogue in critical situations in a multicultural society such as Montenegro may be transferred to the global level with a view to dealing with security threats Europe and the world are facing today in a quality and comprehensive manner," the defence minister said.

This year’s forum in Halifax has once again confirmed that the safety of citizens can be only achieved through promoting democratic values, thus creating conditions for further economic development and long-term peace. The Forum underscored that the stability of a society is possible when the aspirations of the society are shaped by the needs of its citizens and endorsed by both the government and opposition, and agreed with partners at regional and international levels.

In addition to numerous meetings on the sidelines of an international security forum in Halifax, Minister Pejanović-Đurišić talked to Juozas Olekas, Minister of National Defence of Lithuania; Lamberto Zannier, Secretary General of the OSCE; Jeanine Hennis, Dutch Defence Minister; as well as US senators, Tim Kaine and Christopher Murphy.
