PM Đukanović meets with EU Ambassadors: Montenegro remains fully committed to EU membership

Podgorica, Montenegro (20 July 2016) – Prime Minister Đukanović met today with ambassadors of EU countries. The meeting was organised by the Embassy of Slovakia in cooperation with EU Delegation in Podgorica, on the occasion of this country's six months presidency of Council of the European Union.

PM Đukanović presented the achievements made so far and introduced ambassadors with current activities and plans in the negotiation process by the end of 2016, particularly in terms of further opening and provisional closure of the chapters. He pointed out that Montenegro remains fully committed to the EU membership, due to the superiority of the idea of united Europe, as well as the majority support of the citizens of Montenegro to the project of European integration. In this regard, he welcomed the conclusions of the recent Paris Summit, noting that the messages from EU top officials and especially positive trends in the region that are started by Berlin Process represent great encouragement for Montenegro and other countries in the region to continue with quality fulfillment of obligations to meet EU membership.

The Prime Minister conveyed the belief that the preparations for October parliamentary elections are underway, emphasising that significant cooperation with OSCE achieved, and that ODHR and other foreign observers will be invited to monitor the election process. In this context, he underlined the importance of forming the Government of electoral trust and expressed expectation that successful elections will cast away any doubt about transparency, regularity and quality of the electoral process.

On behalf of the EU member states and Slovakia, Ambassador Roman Hloben commended the leadership role of Montenegro in the process of NATO and EU integration. He particularly emphasised historical achievement of the Government of Montenegro, led by Milo Đukanović, regarding its path towards full membership in NATO. He also said that Slovakia is dedicated to the EU enlargement policy, and expressed expectation that by the end of the year Montenegro will open additional chapters and temporarily close the ones that are ready.
The officials also exchanged opinions on other current issues.
