Podgorica, Montenegro (2 September 2016) – In relation to claims made by some media, according to which “a number of” Montenegrin citizens have been apprehended in Turkey for allegedly involvement in an attempted military coup in the Republic of Turkey, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration would like to inform the public that it has been once again confirmed that there is no information about the possible involvement and connection of Montenegrin citizens or institutions with the attempted coup in the Republic of Turkey, according to results of conversation held between Montenegrin ambassador in Ankara, Branko Milic, and the officials of the Republic of Turkey.
Embassy of Montenegro in the Republic of Turkey maintains regular contacts with officials of the Republic of Turkey, in the same manner that the Montenegrin Government authorities have communication with the Embassy of the Republic of Turkey in Montenegro. In all of these contacts, it was explicitly confirmed that not a single citizen from Montenegro has been arrested in Turkey for alleged involvement in an attempted coup. Therefore, the claims of alleged “criminal prosecution” of “a number of” Montenegrin citizens “involved in the coup” are completely unfounded.
Montenegro and the Republic of Turkey have very good and friendly relations, which were confirmed during the meetings that state officials of the two countries had these days. Also, readiness to continue improving relations through regular and timely contacts at all levels was emphasised, with the aim of promoting a comprehensive and quality cooperation between Montenegro and the Republic of Turkey.
