Herceg Novi submits in Brussels final bid for title of European Capital of Culture 2021

Earlier today in Brussels, Herceg Novi submitted to the European Commission the final bid for the title of European Capital of Culture 2021.

On that occasion,the Herceg Novi delegation visited the Mission of Montenegro to the European Union.

Meeting with the Head of the Mission, Ambassador Bojan Šarkić, concluded that the candidacy has outstanding national importance.

European Capital of Culture, one of the biggest events in the world, was established in 1985. A total of 54 cities in Europe held this prestigious title, and Herceg Novi has a great chance to become the first capital of culture outside the EU.

A large team consisted of people from Herceg Novi and Montenegro, in cooperation with international experts, took part in this unique venture in the Montenegrin history. The project was supported by the Municipal Assembly of Herceg Novi, city partners, namely municipalities of Tivat, Kotor, Budva, Bar and Ulcinj, Old Royal Capital of Cetinje and the Capital City of Podgorica, as well as by the Government of Montenegro and President of Montenegro Filip Vujanović, who chairs the Honorary Committee for the project.

The project will encourage the fields of culture, arts, creative industries, education, economy, tourism and youth, as important factors in creating new jobs and economic and infrastructure development.

Jury members and representatives of the European Commission will pay a visit to Herceg Novi on 30 September 2016.

This will be followed by the presentation of the bid before the jury in Brussels on 13 October 2016, followed by the final decision on the winner of this prestigious title.

Nataša Martić, Adviser in the Municipality of Herceg Novi and the project’s coordinator, and Aleksandar Peković, director of the "Herceg Novi 2021" project, handed over the candidacy bid in Brussels.
