New York: EU members support Montenegro's integration

Montenegro has achieved excellent results in a short time, which brought it close to NATO membership, while it continues to record good dynamics in the opening chapters in the field of European integration. That message was sent by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Malta and Cyprus and by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italia in a separate talks with the State Secretary for European Integration and Chief Negotiator, Ambassador Aleksandar Andrija Pejović.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, reiterated a strong support of Latvia for Montenegro’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration. He also conveyed the expectation that Montenegro will continue with reforms at the same pace. When it comes to Montenegro’s accession to NATO, he conveyed the expectation that Latvia’s Parliament will ratify the Protocol on Montenegro's Accession to NATO soon.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, Ioannis Kasoulidis, stressed that Cyprus remains a strong supporter of the further EU enlargement, and that Montenegro can count on the full support of Cyprus in the coming period, especially in the chapters for which Montenegrin institution expressed their interest: 6. Company Law, 28. Consumer and Health Protection, 29. Customs Union.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta, George William Vella, noted that he is very pleased with the speed at which Montenegro is progressing towards EU membership. He conveyed that Malta strongly supports the accession negotiations and Montenegro’s membership in the EU. He pointed out the full readiness to provide the necessary technical and expert support to that plan. In view of the forthcoming Maltese presidency over EU in the first half of 2017, Ambassador Pejović and Minister Vella also exchanged opinions over planned activities and dynamics of opening and closing the negation chapters. Minister Vella conveyed that the Maltese presidency will do its best to help the continuation of intensive Montenegro’s progress towards EU.

During the meeting with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy, Vincenzo Amendola, there was a talk about the Italian presidency over Berlin processes. There was also a discussion about the cooperation between Montenegro and Italy that should be realised through the infrastructural and economic connections between the region and the EU.
