Johannes Hahn congratulates PM Đukanović on election victory and emphasises importance of quick formation of government

Podgorica, Montenegro (28 October 2016) – Prime Minister Milo Đukanović had tonight very constructive telephone conversation with EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn.

The Commissioner reiterated congratulations to the Prime Minister on the election victory, and emphasised the importance of coalition talks for the quick formation of the new government. Hahn expressed his respect for the Prime Minister's decision not to be candidate for the prime minister, as well as the hope to continue cooperation and asked him to continue to promote Montenegro's EU accession process. He particularly highlighted the importance of further reform in Chapters 23 and 24, i.e. credible balance of implementation results, which is vital for the country's further progress in the negotiating process and strengthening the necessary support from the EU member states. Commissioner Hahn expressed his full confidence that Montenegro would continue to follow its strategic choice, and to make further strides in the Euro-Atlantic path.

The Prime Minister thanked for the congratulations, assessing that the electoral race was very difficult, but that Montenegro definitely remains on the European path after this valuable victory. This opens the possibility to continue to play a positive role in the promotion of the European values in the Balkans. He explained his decision not to be candidate for the next term and thanked for understanding, and expressed readiness for further contacts. He pointed out that even in a new capacity he would provide maximum support to achieving Montenegro's strategic goals. He agreed with Commissioner's opinion on the importance of Chapters 23 and 24 for the negotiating process, and expressed belief that the new government would be focused on reforms and strengthening the rule of law.
