Chief Negotiator Pejović discusses European Commission's Montenegro Report 2016 with ambassadors of EU member states

Podgorica, Montenegro (10 November 2016) -- State Secretary for European Integration and Chief Negotiator for EU Accession of Montenegro, Ambassador Aleksandar Andrija Pejović, discussed earlier today the European Commission's Montenegro Report 2016 with ambassadors of the EU member states.

He stressed that this is the most positive report for Montenegro so far, as evidenced by the continuous improvement assessment in terms of meeting political and economic criteria, and achieving readiness for membership in 33 negotiating chapters. He stressed that the report is a good indicator of the results achieved, but also a useful guideline for further reforms. He emphasised that the report comes at the right time, as an important guideline for the work of the new pro-European government.

He pointed out that the European Commission has recognised continued progress in meeting the political criteria, where Montenegro achieved notable results, both ehen it comes to rounding up the legislative framework and establishing institutions, and in terms of sustainable balance results in all areas. He stressed that notable achievements have been made in reforming the public administration, and that the Public Administration Reform Strategy defines further steps to improve its work and prepare for future membership in the EU.

Montenegro has made progress when it comes to economic criteria, both in terms of market economy functioning, and ability to cope with pressure and market forces within the EU. The Ambassador pointed out that, through the programme of economic reforms, the Government will continue to encourage economic activity, contribute to the advancement of the business environment, and strengthen fiscal policy and the labour market.

When it comes to fulfilling membership obligations from 33 negotiating chapters, the Chief Negotiator said that the European Commission's report showed that Montenegro is moving forward, which is best evidenced by 24 opened chapters and several others ready for opening and provisional closure. He thanked the member states for their support in implementing the comprehensive reforms, hopeful that the new government will continue to fulfil its commitments.

Ambassadors of several member states commended Montenegro's progress and conveyed full support for the successful continuation of the process of European integration.
