Podgorica, Montenegro (12 December 2016) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Srđan Darmanović met with US Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence Michael Carpenter.
The Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defence congratulated Minister Darmanovć on his appointment as foreign minister and stressed that the US will continue to support the European and Euro-Atlantic accession of Montenegro.
Minister Darmanović expressed satisfaction with the good cooperation between the two countries, which grew into a strategic partnership built through meaningful relations. He thanked Mr Carpenter for the strong support of the United States for extending NATO invitation to Montenegro and continuous assistance and support in the implementation of the country’s Euro-Atlantic agenda.
Minister Darmanović expressed confidence that the United States will continue to play an indispensable role in the world, stabilise the global opportunities and seek answers to contemporary challenges, and that the Senate will ratify the Protocol on the Accession of Montenegro to NATO as quickly as possible. By doing this, the United States would send another strong message of support for the NATO Open Door policy, which is especially important in the context of the current security situation in Europe and the Western Balkans.
Montenegro’s Foreign Minister informed Mr Carpenter about the current political situation in Montenegro, emphasising that in the recent elections the majority of citizens of Montenegro have shown awareness of what the values of Western civilization are.
