Brussels: Montenegro is example of success of enlargement policy
Montenegro is a good example of the success of the enlargement policy and it can count on the full support of the European Commission on its reform path towards EU membership, Minister of European Affairs Aleksandar Andrija Pejović and Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn concluded in a meeting in Brussels.
Minister Pejović noted that the opening of new chapters is a recognition for the efforts undertaken and good results in these areas. He pointed out that 26 open chapters in the negotiations with the EU confirms a clear European orientation of Montenegro, as well as trust and partnership with the European Commission and its member states.
Two officials agreed that the process of European integration of Montenegro provides visible improvement of the quality of life of theMontenegrin citizens and a more attractive environment for business and investment. In that regard, Minister Pejović conveyed the new Government's commitment to continue with intensive reforms, especially in key areas, such as the rule of law, improving the business environment and fiscal consolidation, as well as further strengthening the capacity of public administration.
Commissioner Hahn said that the opening of new chapters in the field of agriculture and rural development, and social policy and employment, is an important step, which is directly linked to the EU investing in sustainable economic development, especially in rural areas, but also a better quality of life for all citizens.
Speaking about the importance of Chapter 11 - Agriculture and Rural Development, Minister Pejović stressed that the key reforms undertaken in this area will significantly improve the competitiveness of the Montenegrin agricultural products on the European market. As to the opening of the negotiating Chapter 19 - Social Policy and Employment, he said that Montenegro will continue to work towards achieving the highest European standards in important areas, such as health and safety at work, social security and workers' rights.
Commenting on the boycott of the Parliament by the opposition, Commissioner Hahn stressed the need for the Government and opposition to work together to reduce political tensions in Montenegro and urged the opposition to act within the Parliament in order to provide the necessary balance of power.
