Government of Montenegro condemns violence in Parliament

Podgorica, Montenegro (16 February 2017) --Government of Montenegro assessed at the beginning of today's session that yesterday's events in the Parliament are cause for serious concern about aggressive and violent behaviour of a part of opposition MPs and undermining of the integrity of the Parliament, as a legislative authority.

Not only did the representatives of the citizens behave improperly, we also witnessed violence, attacks and threats, demonstrations of force and a series of insults, including those directed at their fellow MPs, based on ethnic and religious grounds.

MPs are not elected to physically attack their counterparts and achieve their political goals by using force.

Government condemns yesterday's events and points out that the Parliament is a place where we should foster tolerance, right to different opinions and political views. It is the place where laws are made and where the rule of law need to be cherished and not arbitrary anarchy of a part of opposition MPs.

Scenes the entire Montenegrin public witnessed yesterday clearly indicate violent behaviour. The Government expects the Supreme State Prosecutor's Office to take actions falling within its competence, thus protecting the integrity of the Parliament, as a legislative authority of Montenegro, as well as each of its MPs in person.
