Munich: State Department supports Montenegro’s membership in NATO

Munich, Germany (18 February 2017) – The USA wil continue strenghthening its strategic partnership with Montenegro, particularly when it comes to supporting the country's Euro-Atlantic accession process, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs John Heffern stressed at the meeting with Prime Minister Duško Marković.

Assistant Secretary Heffern highlighted that the State Department will continue making efforts aimed at persuading the US Senate to ratify Montenegro's NATO Accession Protocol as soon as possible. He added that he strongly supports NATO's open door policy and that every state has the right to seek the membership in any organisation without the interference of the third party. 

PM Marković thanked Mr Heffern for the US continuing support to Montenegro’s European and Euro-Atlantic accession process, emphasising that the two states cherish not only partnership, but also strategic and friendly relations. He also informed Secretary Heffern about the progress Montenegro has made in conducting the reform process, particularly when it comes to the strengthening of the rule of law.

The two officials agreed that the progress in the rule of law is important for improving the quality of life of citizens and creating good business environment in order to achieve better valorisation of the resources and create new jobs.
