Podgorica, Montenegro (22 February 2017) -- Enlargement policy and a clear European and Euro-Atlantic perspective of the Western Balkan states give a strong impetus to peace and stability in the region, Prime Minister Duško Marković and Minister of State at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office Alan Duncan concluded at today's meeting in Podgorica.
The fact that leaving the EU, in Mr Duncan's words, does not mean that the United Kingdom is leaving Europe, and that it remains dedicated to security issues and strengthening bilateral relations with Montenegro and other countries in the region.
The two officials stressed that it is necessary to bring the ratification of the Protocol on the Accession of Montenegro to NATO to an end as quickly as possible. Minister Duncan said that the UK supports European and Euro-Atlantic bids of Montenegro. It was agreed that Montenegro is an important factor of peace and stability in the region.
Commenting on Prime Minister Marković's words that Montenegro, with the help of its partners, including the United Kingdom, has progressed in terms of strengthening the rule of law, developing institutions and combating organised crime, Minister Duncan thanked PM Marković for the cooperation in the fight against cigarette smuggling.
Cooperation between Montenegro and the United Kingdom in the field of public administration and education is valuable for Montenegro, PM Marković noted. United Kingdom is willing to assist Montenegro in fighting against cyber attacks, and the two officials agreed that there is room for better economic cooperation in the tourism sector, but also in the areas of energy, agriculture and infrastructure.
