Podgorica, Montenegro (1 Macrh 2017) -- I start here my visit to the Western Balkan six, because Montenegro is clearly a forerunner in the EU integration process, Frederica Mogherini, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission, told the press conference following her meeting with Prime Minister of Montenegro Duško Marković in Podgorica earlier today.

She reiterated that there will be no progress if there is no strong regional integration and cooperation.

"We have a strategic interest to make sure this region finds a way to cooperate… European Union’s door is open and we want you to walk through that door," EU’s Mogherini stressed.

Rule of law is the foundation of Montenegro's accession process and that is why we are strongly concentrated on fulfilling the requirements set out in chapters 23 and 24, Prime Minister Duško Markovic said.

He added that the Government understands that "internal developments and electoral processes in some countries strongly influence the negotiating position of Montenegro."

PM Marković noted that today’s meeting also discussed the opposition’s boycott of the Parliament.

“I want to say that the boycott is unacceptable for Montenegro, as it is not pro-European and democratic,” he pointed up, adding that the opposition's request about repeating the elections is also unacceptable and that it would mean the annulation of the political system.

He called on political leaders to take responsibility.

“National interest is more important than the one of the parties," the Prime Minister told the press.

EU High Representative Mogherini said that parliament is the heart of democracy of each country, voicing regret that that the opposition also boycotted her address to the Parliament of Montenegro.

She concluded by saying that she is hopeful that Montenegro will find a solution to the problem.
