Minister
of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović
paid today a working visit to the Federal Republic of Germany, where he met
with his German counterpart and Vice-Chancellor Sigmar Gabriel.
Minister
Darmanović thanked Germany for the support provided to Montenegro on its path
towards European and Euro-Atlantic integration. He emphasised the full
commitment to implementing the necessary reforms internally. The Minister
praised the results of numerous projects of development assistance and stressed
the concrete support of Germany at both work and expert levels.
Minister
Darmanović informed his colleague about the events before and on election day,
as well as about the activities undertaken by the competent authorities in the
direction of determining responsibility for the coup attempt.
Minister
Sigmar Gabriel reiterated readiness of Germany to continue to support the
integration process of Montenegro, describing our country as a close friend and
partner of Germany and Europe in the region. In this context, he pointed that
the region is at a crossroads currently, and there is a risk that the progress
achieved in recent years may be called into question. Therefore, he said, the
duty of Germany is to continue to encourage the path of reforms and European
course of the countries of the region.
It was
noted that it is necessary to further strengthen cooperation between the
countries of the region. Both sides emphasised belief that the next meeting of
the Berlin process in Trieste will contribute to improving transport and energy
connections and will provide guidance for future activities.
Ministers
welcomed the results of the elections in the Netherlands, which constitute an
encouragement to European powers aimed at maintaining and strengthening the
unity of the EU during the crisis of European identity and strengthening of
populist ideas.
The
Minister had a meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel's foreign and security
policy adviser Christoph Heusgen, who emphasised that Montenegro is an
important and constructive partner in the integration process and as such, it
can serve as an example to the countries of the region. It was estimated that the completion of ratification process and accession to the
Alliance will strengthen the security architecture of the region and Europe. It
was also pointed out to the importance of continuing the implementation of
commitments in the negotiation process with the European Union.
The
officials exchanged their opinions in the context of the general security situation
in the Western Balkans and Europe.
