PR ServicePR ServicePodgorica, Montenegro (17 March 2017) -- Montenegro is a source of stability and plays an active role in regional cooperation which is very important for the Council of Europe, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Pedro Agramunt said today at a meeting with Prime Minister of Montenegro Duško Marković
Recognising that the parliamentary elections in October last year were free and fair, organised in accordance with the high democratic standards, Agramunt said he is concerned that the parties, which were defeated in the elections, do not participate in the work of the Parliament. He underlined that the boycott is a big mistake, and that democracy implies the solution of problems in the Parliament and not on the streets.
Prime Minister Marković said that the best way for the Government to solve this challenge is an active political dialogue. He pointed out that Montenegro has the capacity to respond to internal political challenges, while preserving stability and the political system. The Prime Minister added that the Government is focused on reducing public debt and deficit, while maintaining development opportunities.
He stressed the need to strengthen regional cooperation as well as the importance of using opportunities to improve the infrastructure through initiatives, such as the Berlin Process.
President Agramunt said that the priorities in the work of PACE are fight against terrorism, migration policy, instability in certain regions and the growth of populism. He explained that they conduct a campaign “No hate, no fear“, which was joined by Prime Minister Marković, in order to send a message to the citizens that they can fight against terrorism themselves, without fear or hatred towards anyone.
It was noted that all the countries of Europe must contend together with the problem of migration. President Agramunt recalled that the dominance of populism in history resulted in millions of victims and we should never forget it.
Thanking for the congratulations on the 10th anniversary of Montenegro's membership in the Council of Europe, Prime Minister Marković said that the Organisation was involved in all reform processes of the state and society. He accepted the invitation of the PACE President Agramunt to be a guest at the June session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
