After a meeting of the Minister of Science Sanja Damjanović with high delegation of EMBL and EMBO, paying an official visit to Montenegro on 18-20 April 2017, it was agreed that Montenegro will apply for full membership in the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO), seated in Germany.
During the discussion with the Minister, the necessary steps were considered for our country to apply for full membership and possibilities were analyzed for establishing cooperation through the involvement of Montenegrin research teams, primarily young researchers.
The EMBL/EMBO delegation included Dr. Silke Schumacher, Director of the International Cooperation Department of EMBL, Dr. Gerlind Wallon, Deputy Director of EMBO and Ms. Jana Pavlić from the International Cooperation Department of EMBL.
EMBL and EMBO provide the possibility of attending doctoral and postdoctoral studies, as well as the active involvement of young researchers in international projects implemented by the two institutions, which will enable our scientists to use cutting-edge technologies in the field of molecular biology and medicine.
- I am pleased we talked today about the possibility of Montenegro’s accession to full membership of these important scientific institutions. The most important segment of science is international cooperation, the involvement of our researchers in major international projects in the framework of reputable institutions. It is what our science lacks. Therefore, the Ministry of Science will try, through its scientists, engineers and students, to include Montenegro in the scientific map of Europe and the world by joining international projects, which is also considered part of the European integration, said Minister of Science Sanja Damjanović.
The Minister pointed out that she was pleased with great response and interest of our researchers from various institutions and especially with the fact that among them there were a large number of young people.
- Joining the organizations as a full member will enable our researchers to have access to modern technologies, be networked with eminent researchers in their fields, and conduct their research directly from the Montenegrin institutions, said Minister Damjanović after meeting with the delegation of EMBL and EMBO.
As part of the visit, a workshop was organized in the Rectorate of the University of Montenegro. Once the event was opened by the Minister of Science, research teams from our country presented their activities. Presentations were held by Dr. Danilo Mrdak (University of Montenegro), Dr. Vladan Božović (Donja Gorica University), Prof. Olivera Miljanović (Clinical Centre of Montenegro and the Faculty of Medicine), Dr. Bojan Adžić (Specialist Veterinary Laboratory) and Milena Simović, a student representative.
This was also a perfect opportunity for our scientists to get acquainted with activities and programmes of EMBL and EMBO.
The EMBL/EMBO delegation has also met with representatives of the Montenegrin Academy of Sciences and Arts and University of Montenegro and paid an official visit to the Institute of Marine Biology in Kotor.
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the world’s leading research institutions. The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) brings together more than 1,700 scientists from Europe, and their main objectives are to support talented researchers, exchange scientific information, and provide assistance in building the European research environment where scientists can work on their research.
