Ten years of Montenegro’s membership in Council of Europe

Podgorica, Montenegro (11 May 2017) -- On the occasion of 11 May, the day that marks the tenth anniversary of Montenegro’s membership in the Council of Europe, Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović sent a letter to the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland, expressing appreciation for the excellent cooperation between the oldest pan-European organisation and Montenegro in the previous period. On this occasion, he stressed the importance of the support provided within reform of the judicial system, in terms of increasing the transparency of the electoral process, as well as in the context of the promotion and protection of a wide range of rights and freedoms enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights and Freedoms.

Referring to activities jointly carried out during the ten years of Montenegro’s membership in the Council of Europe, Minister Darmanović highlighted the importance of intergovernmental and parliamentary cooperation, as well as cooperation that is realised at the local level with various bodies of the Council of Europe, emphasising the importance of sharing and coordination that is realised in the framework of the Council of Europe partial contracts. He thanked the Secretariat of the Council of Europe and members of expert and working teams for their commitment to providing valuable contributions to the modernisation of national legislation, confirming the readiness of the Government of Montenegro to remain a dedicated partner and responsible actor within the organisation of 47 European countries.

Minister Darmanović also stressed the importance of current project activities which are implemented through a Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey, which provides support to a numerous Montenegrin institutions in the area of capacity building, as well as encouraging and supporting activities of the negotiations.
