Brussels, Belgium (24 May 2017) -- Prime Minister of Montenegro Duško Marković met today with High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission Federica Mogherini.

Speaking to the High Representative, the Prime Minister pointed out that Montenegro's commitment to the path towards the European Union is stronger than ever, adding that as a NATO member, our country is now continuing the process of European integration in a different and stronger capacity.

The High Representative of the European Commission said that Montenegro's membership in NATO is very good news, stressing that this country is an example of a successful approach. As she noted, it is important that Montenegro continues to strongly progress.

Prime Minister Marković recalled the expectation of our country to finish the accession negotiations for up to five years.

We have no hidden agenda and we want to strongly go that railway, focusing on reform and the adoption of European values in order to enter the European Union with our full potential,” the Prime Minister of Montenegro Duško Marković stated.

Speaking of tonight’s meeting with the prime ministers of the six countries of the Western Balkans, High Representative Mogherini said she wanted to announce to the PMs that the whole region has a European perspective, but all must work together to overcome the current turbulence. According to Mogherini, her goal is to see if this is a shared agenda and to try to send a common positive message.

The Prime Minister of Montenegro congratulated the High Representative on the determination and the courage to implement policies related to the Western Balkans. In this connection, he assessed that the tonight’s meeting and initiatives of this type are very important. Prime Minister Marković emphasised the need of trying to resolve problems by our region itself, reliably without the need for mediation of the European Commission.

He added that is very important to strengthen the relations within a region, along with the work on a European agenda. As he explained, it is necessary to work together, hand in hand, in order to master the challenges.
