PM Marković: US Senator Johnson congratulates Montenegro on courage and leadership

Podgorica, Montenegro (29 May 2017) – At the meeting with Prime Minister Duško Marković, US Senator Ron Johnson congratulated Montenegro on the achieved results, demonstrated courage and leadership, adding that Montenegro is an example and inspiration for other countries.

Having in mind the forthcoming formalisation of Montenegro’s membership in NATO, PM Marković stressed that this goal couldn’t be achieved without the US strong support not only at the political level, but also when it comes to the strengthening democracy and institutions set up. The two officials agreed that the rule of law is important for creating favourable business environment and attracting American investors.

PM Marković informed Mr Johnson about the increased interest for investing in Montenegro, with a particular emphasis on tourism, energy, agriculture and infrastructure. Therefore, he stressed that the Government is focused on boosting the economic development, creating new jobs and increasing the quality of life of citizens.

The Government is willing to meet all the requirements from the membership in the Alliance, PM Marković stressed, adding that it has the intention to allocate 2% of the GDP for defence by the end of 2024. It does not represent an expense, but an investment in security and future, PM Marković outlined.

The meeting also discussed the interference of a third party in the internal issues of the Western Balkan countries, whereas the Prime Minister emphasised the importance of the US strong presence not only in Europe, but also in the region.
