“Today we have achieved the most important foreign policy goal and strategic decision of Montenegro in the modern history”, said Minister of Defence Predrag Bošković, MSc, at tonight’s reception organized on the occasion of today’s depositing the accession instruments in Washington DC by which our country officially became NATO member state.

He pointed out that our country’s prosperity was clearly highlighted as a main value to which we strived in achieving the goal, because, he added, the history many times taught us that Montenegro had lost its state subjectivity when the freedom and security of others were placed in the forefront. Minister said that Montenegrin Euro-Atlantic path would not bring any negative consequences to any country, instead, we would be, as before, a mainstay of the Collective Security System in the unstable area of the Western Balkans.

“I hope we will stand as an example to other countries in terms of their foreign policy positioning. NATO membership will bring additional value only with a high degree of regional security and cooperation”, noted Minister of Defence.

Bošković has repeated that Montenegro, gaining its NATO membership, got a seat at the table where a modern global policy has been created, preserved all democracy principles, and improved the rule of law.

“To be a part of the family of modern democracy within the world largest and most functional international alliance, is a great privilege for us as well as the obligation to continue with the same or even greater intensity in implementing values and principles cherished by the North Atlantic Alliance”, told Minister of Defence.

Having addressed the present diplomats, representatives of Montenegrin media, and NGO sector, he sublimated the previous period since June 3 2006, when, by the Declaration of independence of Montenegro passed by the Parliament of Montenegro, the Euro-Atlantic path had been proclaimed as one of the state’s foreign policy priorities, until the invitation to membership in December 2015, and June 2016 when the Protocol of accession had been signed. As he pointed out, “behind our current status is comprehensive, laborious and dedicated work on the reform of the entire Montenegrin society, primarily in the defence sector”.

He underlined that Montenegro would, also as a member of the Alliance, with its continued contribution, reforms, modernization, strategies, justify the confidence of allies.

Minister Bošković thanked the attendees for competent and professional relationship contributing to the realization of a common goal, and urged to continue with the same intensity so that Montenegro should be recognized as an equal international subject and reliable ally.
