PM Marković meets with ECHR President: There is no systematic violation of human rights in Montenegro

Prime Minister Duško Marković and President of the European Court of Human Rights Guido Raimondi assessed today in a meeting in Strasbourg that there is no systematic violation of human rights in Montenegro and that the country and the Court cooperate perfectly.

The President of the Court briefed Prime Minister Marković about the functioning of this institution, with particular emphasis on the current phase of the dialogue with the national judiciary, which should result in significant reduction of the pressure on the Court regarding the number of cases which, even after the reduction, has tens of thousands. It has been emphasised that three-quarters of cases arriving in the Court come from a group of six countries.

In that sense, only 89 cases, which came from Montenegro, are not worrying, the President of the European Court of Human Rights said. The analysis pointed out that a greater number of cases relate to the inefficiency of the judiciary.

PM Marković particularly emphasised the reputation that the European Court of Human Rights has in Montenegro in professional circles and among citizens, adding that the execution of European Court decisions helps Montenegrin judiciary to raise the level of its work or to improve it.

The officials also discussed the upcoming election of a new judge from Montenegro instead of Judge Nebojša Vučinić, whose term ends soon.
