Prime Minister Marković with German Chancellor Merkel: Germany supports Montenegro's path towards EU

Trieste, Italy (12 July 2017) – Prime Minister Duško Marković met with German Chancellor Angela Merkel during the Western Balkans Summit which takes place in Trieste. 

Chancellor Merkel congratulated PM Marković on Montenegro's membership in NATO and voiced the full support to Montenegro's EU accession process, commending the country's progress made so far. 

PM Marković informed Chancellor Merkel about the reforms the Government is being implemented, adding that the main goal is to continue pursuing the economic development, thus remaining committed to the rule of law and improving the business environment.

Noting that the two countries cherish good political relations, PM Marković stressed that the cooperation should be strengthen also when it comes to the economy. „We want a greater presence of German investors in Montenegro,“ PM Marković pointed out.

When it comes to the situation in the Western Balkans, PM Marković voiced belief that peace and stability in every country remain a key factor in pursuing economic development and better quality of life of citizens of all Western Balkan countries.

Speaking of the European integration process, German Chancellor Merkel noted that the fact that Montenegro is a small country can be an advantage in conducting the reform process. She particularly emphasised the need for making progress in the rule of law and reform of the judiciary.

PM Marković informed Chancellor Merkel about the successful implementation of the fiscal consolidation measures, voicing his commitment to improve political relations by opening the Government's door to the certain opposition political parties once political conditions for that step are created.

PM Marković thanked Chancellor Merkel for a vision and leadership in Europe and invited her to visit Montenegro.
