On 25 July 2017, the Minister of Science of Montenegro Dr. Sanja Damjanović paid an official visit to the Ministry of Innovation and Public Administration of Republic of Albania, on the occasion of which she met with Minister Milena Harito and her team, primarily with a view to present to her Albanian counterpart the initiative to establish an international scientific institute for development of sustainable technologies in South-eastern Europe, with the mission of “Science for Peace”.
During the meeting, Minister of Innovation and Public Administration of Republic of Albania Milena Harito expressed her full support for the further implementation of the initiative, stating how pleased she was that her country could contribute to this exceptional project, which, according to her, could certainly have a significant impact on raising the quality of scientific research and scientific capacities in the entire region.
The initiative will contribute to economic development, raise the living standard and reduce unemployment and outflow of young experts from the region, all of which account for great challenges the region is presently facing, the two ministers have agreed.
Minister Damjanović has introduced Minister Harito to the fact that currently there are two options for the scientific concept of the institute: “Synchrotron Light Source”, based on new technology, with a wide range of research and application in various branches of industry and “Hadron cancer therapy and research in Biomedicine” (using protons and heavier ions), which involves the use of state-of-the-art technology in the treatment of cancer. A group of international experts and eminent professionals in this field will prepare a technical specification for both project options by the end of October.
The meeting was also attended by Vesna Radonjić, adviser to the Ambassador of Montenegro to Albania Dušan Mrdović.
The Government of Montenegro was the first among the governments of countries of the region to support the initiative to establish an international scientific institute for development of sustainable technologies in South-eastern Europe. In the previous period, the interest in the initiative was expressed by the ministers of science of: the Republic of Slovenia, the Republic of Croatia, the Republic of Serbia, the Republic of Macedonia and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The main initiator of the idea to establish the institute was Prof. Herwig Schopper, former Director-General of CERN, and the initiative has also received support of the UN, UNESCO and CERN, as well as of Carlos Moedas, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation, who met with Minister Damjanović in May in Brussels, expressing his full support to the project.
