On 28-29 August, Minister of Science Dr. Sanja Damjanović and Professor Herwig Schopper will pay an official visit to the “Abdus Salam ICTP” Institute in Trieste, at the invitation of Director of the Institute, Dr. Fernando Quevedo, with a view to obtaining support for the Initiative to establish an international scientific institute for sustainable technologies in South East Europe.

The aim of the visit is to present the Initiative in detail. In addition, the meeting will be an opportunity to exchange opinions and discuss the way in which ICTP Institute could support the project.

In late 2017, a Scientific Forum of the Countries of South East Europe is scheduled to be held, which will be an opportunity for representatives of the international commission of experts to present the technical specifications for both project options, and ICTP Institute has offered to host the Forum. The meeting in Trieste will be an opportunity to discuss details regarding the organization of this Forum.

In addition, during the official visit, other ways of cooperation and support by the ICTP Institute will be defined, which would be of great importance for the implementation of the Initiative.

One of the topics to be discussed during the visit will be the possibility of training young experts from the region of South East Europe at the ICTP Institute, with a view to preparing them for work and leadership within the new project. This type of significant support was already provided by the ICTP Institute in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, to scientists from the Middle East during the construction of the SESAME project in Jordan.

ICTP is a prestigious world class institute, founded in 1964 by the Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam. Since 1996, UNESCO is responsible for managing the Institute, which operates under the agreement between the Government of Italy, UNESCO and the International Atomic Energy Agency – IAEA.

About 130,000 scientists from over 188 countries around the world have worked at the Institute to date, significantly improving their professional careers and contributing to the development of science in their countries through various ICTP programmes.

During the visit, Minister Damjanović and Prof. Schopper will be invited to attend the ICTP Diploma Award Ceremony on 28 August.
