Podgorica, Montenegro (1 September 2017) – Bulgaria strongly supports further EU enlargement on the Western Balkans, Deputy Prime Minister for Judical Reform and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva highlighted at the meeting with Prime Minister Duško Marković, adding that Montenegro can be an example to the others having in mind that the country has achieved the most visible progress when it comes to the EU integration process.

PM Marković noted that the region is still not stable, stressing the importance of the European perspective for the Western Balkan countries. He also commended the regional economic cooperation launched within the Berlin Process. The Government remains committed to the European agenda, PM Marković said, voicing expectations that Montenegro will intensify the negotiation process by closing the negotiation chapters during the Bulgarian presidency next year.

DPM Zahaireva said that Bulgaria will continue supporting Montenegro’s EU path, adding that the Berlin Process could serve as preparation for the more intensified EU integration process and certainly not as a substitute for it. She commended the strengthening of the regional cooperation agreed at the Trieste Summit, voicing her strong belief that Montenegro can complete the EU negotiation process and become a full-fledged EU member state in the next five years.

The two officials agreed that good political bilateral relations between the two countries should be strengthened at an economic level too by connecting the businessmen in Montenegro and Bulgaria. Montenegro has numerous potentials, particularly in the energy and infrastructure and those areas should be out of the most interest for boosting cooperation between the two countries, the meeting pointed out.
