“Abdus Salam ICTP” Institute from Trieste and the Ministry of Science to organize a Scientific Forum of the Countries of South East Europe

Based on an agreement made during the official visit of Minister of Science of Montenegro Dr. Sanja Damjanović and Professor Herwig Schopper to the ICTP Institute in Trieste, organized at the invitation of Director of the Institute, Dr. Fernando Quevedo, the ICTP Institute and the Ministry of Science will organize a Scientific Forum of the Countries of South East Europe, under the auspices of UNESCO, in January 2018.

The leaders of the Institute have recognized the importance of establishing an international institute in our region, which would represent a major milestone for the economy of the countries of South East Europe, contributing to the reduction of the outflow of young talents and, in particular, making this region competitive in relation to the rest of Europe.

During the meeting, the ways for the ICTP Institute to continue supporting this project have been considered, especially in the form of training programmes for young researchers from the region with a view to prepare them for future management of the new institute in the area of South East Europe.

The ICTP Institute, founded in 1964 by the Nobel Laureate Abdus Salam, traditionally supports scientists from all over the world through various programmes and has so far enabled 130,000 scientists from over 188 countries around the world to significantly advance their professional careers and contribute to the development of science in their homelands.

This type of significant support has already been provided by the ICTP Institute in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency, to scientists from the Middle East during the preparation of the SESAME project in Jordan.

Since 1996, UNESCO is responsible for managing the Institute, which operates under the agreement between the Government of Italy, UNESCO and the International Atomic Energy Agency – IAEA.
