Tallinn: Foreign Minister Darmanović participates in informal meeting of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs (Gymnich)

Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović participated today in the informal meeting of EU Ministers of Foreign Affairs and candidates for EU membership (Gymnich), which is being held in Tallinn within the Estonian presidency of the EU.

The main topic of the informal ministerial meeting was the prevention of radicalism and violent extremism. The officials agreed that terrorism and the spread of radical ideologies are one of the biggest security challenges of the present time, which requires a collective response and strengthening of cooperation on the European and global level.

At the meeting, Minister Darmanović confirmed Montenegro's commitment to the fight against terrorism and violent extremism. He emphasised the contribution that Montenegro provides through participation in the Global Coalition for victory over the ISIS and the mission "Decisive support" in Afghanistan, but also through regional mechanisms of cooperation in the area of security, such as the Adriatic Charter (A5) and the Adriatic Trilateral (Montenegro - Albania - Croatia). The Minister also emphasised that the strengthening of precisely these forms of cooperation can demonstrate, in a concrete, beneficial and convincing manner, the willingness and ability of the region to be part of the solution of global security challenges.

He also pointed out that Montenegro, as a new member of NATO and a candidate for EU membership, strongly supports all efforts made by these two organisations in order to neutralise the threat of radicalism and violent extremism, and pledged to further strengthen the exchange of information and data on ISIS and other extremist organisations, which is an effective way of preventing terrorist attacks.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Minister Darmanović had short bilateral meetings with the ministers of foreign affairs of Great Britain, Poland, Spain, Portugal, Hungary, Lithuania, and Denmark.
