New York, the USA (19 September 2017) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs Srđan Darmanović took part in a high-level meeting in New York dedicated to United Nations reform, which was hosted by US President Donald Trump.

Minister Darmanović also participated in a meeting dedicated to the inauguration of the Global Alliance to end the trade in goods used for capital punishment and torture. He stressed the unequivocal support of Montenegro for the universal abolition of the capital punishment, pointing out that countries that continue to apply the capital punishment should respect international human rights standards in order to minimise the possible suffering of those sentenced to death.

Minister Darmanović noted that Montenegro, in line with EU standards, has developed a solid legislative framework, supported by appropriate strategic documents in the field of control of arms exports, dual-use goods and other controlled goods, adding that the Draft Law on foreign trade of goods that can be used for the execution of capital punishment, torture or other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatments or punishments is in the parliamentary procedure.

He reiterated Montenegro's willingness to participate actively in the further work of the Alliance and to contribute to raising awareness of improving the state of human rights, with particular emphasis on the abolition of the capital punishment and all inhuman consequences arising from its application.

Montenegro joined the Joint Statement on Preventing and Combating Sexual Exploitation and Abuse by UN members at a meeting chaired by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on 18 September. On that occasion, the solidarity of the international community in condemning and committing to the fight against sexual exploitation and abuse was demonstrated at the high political level, while putting the rights and dignity of victims of sexual exploitation and abuse at the forefront of collective efforts.
