DPM Pažin, European Commission’s Calavera: Montenegro is leader in region when it comes to European integration process

Podgorica, Montenegro (16 October 2017) – Deputy Prime Minister for Political System, Interior and Foreign Policy Zoran Pažin met earlier today with Director for the Western Balkans at the Directorate-General for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations of the European Commission, Genoveva Ruiz Calavera.
DPM Pažin informed Director General Calvera about recent activities and efforts of Montenegrin institutions aimed at strengthening the rule of law. He highlighted that the Government of Montenegro and all law enforcement institutions are fully prepared to start a new phase within the negotiation process, particularly when it comes to obtaining benchmarks needed for closing the negotiation process in the chapters 23 and 24.
European Commission representative Calavera reiterated encouraging words of the European Commission’s president in terms of strengthening the EU enlargement policy. She highlighted that the EU wants to increase the number of full-fledged member states, adding that Montenegro is a leader in the EU integration process followed by other countries in the region. Ms Calavera also informed DPM Pažin about European Commission’s plans related to Montenegro’s negotiation process with the EU, as well as the EU’s efforts in providing support to strengthening the rule of law, public administration reform process and economic progress.
DPM Pažin reiterated that the last year’s parliamentary elections were rated as fair and democratic by all relevant international observers, adding that the Government is willing to continue strengthening the legal framework throughout the implementation of all the OSCE/ODIHR recommendations. In that regard, Ms Calavera commended the Government’s efforts in creating conditions for improving the electoral system.
The two officials discussed further steps aimed at strengthening capacities in the fields important for the negotiation process, as well as the importance of enhanced coordination when it comes to the IPA support in the coming period.
