Government of Montenegro and UN System in Montenegro mark United Nations Day

Podgorica, Montenegro (24 October 2017) -- On the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of the adoption of the Charter of the United Nations, the Government of Montenegro and the United Nation System in Montenegro organised a joint ceremony marking the United Nations Day at Villa "Gorica". The topic of this year's celebration is "Towards sustainable future".

The hosts of the ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister for Political System, Interior and Foreign Policy and Minister of Justice Zoran Pažin and UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for Montenegro Fiona McCluney , who addressed the officials.

The focus of the anniversary was the retrospective of the 72 years of the United Nations work and the future of the world organisation in the context of the Agenda for Sustainable Development by 2030, adopted by world leaders at the UN General Assembly in 2015. The new development plan, based on Seventeen Sustainable Development Goals, represents a vision of a better world, a universal plan for eradicating poverty, preserving the planet, establishing peace and enabling progress for all people.

The United Nations Day is traditionally celebrated around the world in memory of the 24 October 1945, when the Charter of the United Nations came into force. The ratification of this document officially established the United Nations, the main goals of which are establishing peace and security, supporting development and social progress, and protecting human rights. The United Nations was founded by 51 leaders and the world organisation now has 193 member states. Montenegro became a member of the United Nations in June 2006, as the 192nd member of the organisation.
