FM Darmanović on border with Kosovo: Montenegro has never nullified ratified international agreement, it will not do that this time either

Podgorica, Montenegro (6 November 2017) -- Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Srđan Darmanović reiterated earlier today that as far as Montenegro is concerned the issue of demarcation of the border with Kosovo has been completed and that this is not only the country's position, but also of the European Union and the United States of America, and that Montenegro has never nullified a ratified international agreement and that it will not do that this time either.

"I do not have much to add to what I have said more than once on this topic. We have done everything in our power. We had signed an international agreement with Kosovo in good faith in Vienna and ratified it in parliament as required by the international law and good practice among countries," said Minister Darmanović in Podgorica answering questions from journalists after talks with his Romanian counterpart Teodor Melescanu.

Minister Darmanović reiterated that as far as Montenegro is concerned, the border issue is a "solved matter."

"I have already said before, I do not know that Montenegro, that is, its parliament, has ever nullified a ratified international agreement, so this will not happen this time either. We are, of course, patient to wait for the possible positive development of the events in Kosovo since this is their internal issue. We do not want to make any pressure or any atmosphere of irregularity as to when the Kosovo parliament will come up with a formula under which this international agreement will be ratified. As you have seen, the European Union and the United States have an identical stand on this matter. Therefore, our position is not surprising and I do not have anything new to say. Concerning eventual international arbitration - arbitration requires consent of the two parties, and I already said that we have finished this job," Minister Darmanović concluded.
