Podgorica, Montenegro(11 December 2017) -- Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Milutin Simović said that notable results were achieved in the area of agriculture and rural development in the past year, adding that conditions have been created for continuing the momentum.

"Hardworking farmers and entrepreneurs can expect even more extensive support from the Government, ministries and our international partners, with the support from the local level, and participation of the expert and scientific community and the civil society," said DPM Simović speaking at the opening of the Conference on Agriculture and Rural Development, which took place in Nikšić earlier today.

Deputy Prime Minister Simović pointed out that the state policy in the area of agriculture and rural development has been gradually, carefully and responsibly harmonised with the European agricultural policy.

"Together with our colleagues from the European Commission Directorate, we have met the defined agenda. The latest and best confirmation of this is the fact that we have met all the preconditions and successfully completed the accreditation process and signed the Financial Agreement on the implementation of the IPARD programme with EUR 39 million available to our agricultural producers," DPM Simović," underlined.

DPM Simović highlighted the results achieved by both agriculture producers and institutions – the eight food production facilities that have received EU export certificates and the prevention of the import of 92 consignments with over 800 tons of food not fit for consumption, which were supposed to be placed on our market.

"Our common result is the newly established agribusiness centres in Šavnik and Petnjica, as well as the two centres to be established in Mojkovac and Andrijevica," said Simović.

Minister Simović also pointed to the increased allocations from the national budget for agriculture and rural development in the next year, inviting all the interested parties to submit proposals and suggestions for drafting the new Agrobudget. Namely, with the start of the IPARD start-up of EUR 39 million of grants, the structure for the start of realization of the project, funded by the International Fund for Agricultural Development - IFAD, worth EUR 5.8 million, was created, which will contribute to the rural development in seven municipalities. Also, the concept of a loan from the Abu Dhabi Fund has been defined, which will provide a wider coverage for the remaining 24 million dollars. Minister Simović pointed out that Montenegro have completed negotiations with the World Bank and have contracted a new project worth EUR 30 million, which will contribute to strengthening competitiveness in the sector of production and processing of agricultural products, rural development, strengthening of the fisheries sector, as well as building and improving the capacity for food control.

The National Conference gathered a significant number of relevant stakeholders in the field of agriculture and rural development, including representatives of local governments, agricultural producers, processors, NGOs. The conference was attended by about 90 participants from seven countries in the region: Albania, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia Montenegro and Serbia.
