At today's session, the Cabinet assented the Law on Local Self-Government with the Report from the public debate.

At the press conference following the Cabinet session, Minister of Public Administration Suzana Pribilović informed the public about the details of the solutions contained in the Law.

She pointed out that the new solutions contained in the Draft Law on Local Self-Government further improve the local self-government performance on the principles of professionalism, responsibility, openness and efficiency of the work of local self-government bodies.

This proposal retains the current concept of local self-government in relation to transparency, one-level form of local self-government, monotypic concept of local self-government and same competences, while new solutions are aimed at improving the principles on which the local self-government system is based – professionalism, accountability, openness and efficiency of the work of local self-government bodies, Minister Pribilović said.

The Minister of Public Administration emphasised that the most significant amendments to the Draft Law refer to a more precise way of convening the first session of the newly elected Assembly, the issue of its mandate duration, dismissal and reduction of the mandate, the possibility of extending the Assembly's mandate in emergency situations, as well as the issue of calling elections for the Municipal Assembly in the event of termination of the mandate before the expiration of the period for which it was elected.
