Foreign Minister Darmanović takes part in Munich Security Conference

Munich, Germany (17 February 2018) -- Minister of Foreign Srđan Darmanović took part in the work of the Munich Security Conference, the largest and most prestigious international security forum, which focused this year on political and security challenges facing Europe and the world: the preservation of the existing international order, fight against terrorism and radicalism, strengthening of cyber - security, deterring hybrid attacks and preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

On the sidelines of the Conference, Minister Darmanović met with senior officials and representatives of international organisations.

At the meeting with Spain's Foreign Minister Alfonso Maria Dastis, both sides pointed out the importance of the opening of the Embassy of Montenegro in Madrid, which will further influence the strengthening of overall cooperation and the dynamisation of political and working contacts.

Foreign Minister Darmanović also spoke with his Danish counterpart Anders Samuelsen, stressing that Montenegro remains strongly committed to reform activities in order to complete the process of accession negotiations in a high-quality manner and become the next EU member.

Minister Samuelsen praised Montenegro’s progress and supported the implementation of the regatta principle in the EU enlargement policy.

Montenegrin Foreign Minister also met in Munich with President of the UN General Assembly Miroslav Lajčak.

The two officials exchanged views on the political and security situation in Europe, with particular emphasis on the challenges the Western Balkans faces. The meeting concluded that integration is the best guarantor of the long-term stability and prosperity of the region.

In a brief meeting with German Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigmar Gabriel, Minister Darmanović informed his German counterpart about the position of Montenegro in the context of current political and security developments in the region. Minister Gabriel commended the European progress of Montenegro so far and the efforts it has made in preserving and improving the good neighbourly relations of the region.

Minister Darmanović also spoke with OSCE Secretary General Thomas Greminger and underlined the importance of the OSCE support for Montenegro’s reform processes. He stressed Montenegro's willingness to continue and intensify the reform efforts in order to complete the EU negotiation process as quickly as possible.

OSCE Secretary General Greminger praised the constructive role that Montenegro has in the region, emphasising that it is recognised in the OSCE as a good example other countries should follow.

This year's Munich Security Conference was the first in which Montenegro participated in the NATO member's capacity.
