In cooperation with the Faculty of Science and Mathematics of the University of Montenegro and the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the Ministry of Science organized today the Second International Masterclass in Particle Physics, under the auspices of CERN and IPPOG (International Particle Physics Outreach Group).
- I am glad that Montenegro is participating in this prestigious educational programme organized by CERN again. Unlike last year, Montenegro is a full member of the CERN’s CMS experiment this year, Dr. Sanja Damjanović, Minister of Science of Montenegro, said in her opening address.
The international class in particle physics was attended by secondary school students from several cities across Montenegro. The Minister told the students that the Ministry of Science had opened the way to CERN, which had three missions: shifting the boundaries of knowledge, developing technologies, and education – the third and most significant one. There are 13,000 people working in CERN, the biggest percentage of whom are young people, which means that their peers are also part of these important projects, the Minister pointed out addressing the students.
- Today, you are going to be real scientists, you will solve the same problems that are solved by scientists in CERN, and you will have access to real data, the Minister said, adding that the students would feel the unique beauty of science when exchanging ideas and comparing results with peers from other cities in the world.
Masterclass is an educational and research programme that involves about 200 scientists from 55 countries around the world.
The participants were also addressed by the mentor of the Montenegrin group, Prof. Dr. Nataša Raičević from the Faculty of Science and Mathematics, currently working on the CMS project at CERN, who presented the members of the team and familiarized the students with the research they are conducting in Geneva.
- Our team is composed of young people, not only students of physics, Jelena Mijušković and Itana Bubanja, but also students of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and two programmers who use experimental material from CMS. Therefore, the array of possibilities provided by such projects is very broad, Prof. Raičević said, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary approach to projects and team work, given the demanding nature of the research that could not be conducted by one person.
The students were led through the Masterclass programme by Dr. Lidija Živković, a scientist adviser at the Institute of Physics Belgrade, who works in CERN.
The students had the opportunity to get acquainted with the theoretical and experimental aspects of elemental particle physics, as well as to virtually visit CERN and ask questions to its resident scientists, participate in the quiz and compare the results with peers from other European cities. - I am glad that Montenegro is participating in this prestigious educational programme organized by CERN again.
