DPM Simović opens Home for Elderly in Pljevlja: Our task is to take best possible care of the elderly

Podgorica, Montenegro (11 April 2018) -- Deputy Prime Minister Milutin Simović opened earlier today the Home for the Elderly in Pljevlja. He said on that occasion that the care for children, the elderly and those in need of help is a particularly important task for every government and for every state, and that only the societies that care about these categories of the population have a chance to progress.

"Responsible state policy and numerous steps that Montenegro has made in the overall social and economic development are recognised by our friends from the international community. An example of international support is the Regional Housing Project, which will solve the housing issue for about 6,000 people, or about 1,200 households belonging to vulnerable categories. The total value of this project is about EUR 28 million, and the state's participation is about EUR 4.2 million. One of the buildings built within this project is the Home for the Eldelry in Pljevlja. It is worth over 2.8 million euros, of which about 2 million is provided by donors, and the rest is provided by the local government and the Government of Montenegro. Therefore, this project represents an example of care and solidarity at local, national and international levels," said Deputy Prime Minister Simović.

He thanked the European Union, as the main donor to this project, but also the governments of the United States, Italy, Germany, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark and Turkey, as well as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe Development Bank, who in various ways helped the project.

"I believe that in June this year, together, we will mark the beginning of construction of a new home for the elderly in Nikšić, worth over 8 million euros, which will provide accommodation for 208 elderly people," the Deputy Prime Minister stressed.

He added that the co-financing of housing units for the needs of pensioners throughout Montenegro has also been provided.

"Apartments for pensioners in Nikšić, Podgorica, Bijelo Polje, Rožaje, Pljevlja, Cetinje are being built or are in preparation for the construction, and construction is planned in other municipalities as well. Adequate care for our elders is the best way to thank them for everything they have done during their working and lifetime. And they have done a lot and have embedded themselves in the economic and social foundations of modern Montenegro," Deputy Prime Minister Milutin Simović concluded.
