Sofia, Bulgaria (17 May 2018) -- On the sidelines of the EU - Western Balkans Summit in Sofia, Prime Minister Duško Marković met with German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel.

The two officials stressed the great importance of the first EU - Western Balkans Summit after 15 years and exchanged views on further European perspective of Montenegro and the region. Chancellor Merkel welcomed the constructive role of Montenegro in the region.

Referring to the results of Montenegro's European accession process laid down in this year's European Commission report on Montenegro, Prime Minister Marković and Chancellor Merkel agreed that, in addition to the progress achieved, further efforts need to be made in the areas of the rule of law and media freedom.

PM Marković informed Chancellor Merkel that the Government has an agenda to respond to all the challenges and create a political and social environment for the period ahead.

"This is the moment when we need more money, but more capacity as well. The Government is set to tackle these challenges quickly and efficiently. Ensuring freedom of the media and protecting journalists are fundamental values. We will do our best to achieve this," said Prime Minister Duško Marković.

As to the connectivity agenda today's meeting focused on, both sides underlined the importance of the next meeting under the auspices of the Berlin Process that will be held in London in July, which will be a new opportunity to summarise the results in achieving the planned agendas.
