Minister of Science Sanja Damjanović met today in Brussels with European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation at European Commission Mr. Carlos Moedas, with whom she talked about financial support for the regional project of establishing the South-East European International Institute for Sustainable Technologies (SEEIIST).

During the meeting, Commissioner Moedas expressed strong support for the project by the European Commission, as well as himself personally, announcing that the Commission would soon come out with the formula for stage funding of the project.

- The region of South East Europe is extremely important for us and the SEEIIST project will have our full support in the coming period. This is a great example that deserves our attention and I will personally engage so that you get a clear funding formula for the next three-year period by the end of this year, Moedas announced.

Minister of Science said in her statement that she was glad that she had the opportunity to meet with the Commissioner again, reflecting on their first meeting in May last year, when she first presented the Initiative to establish the Institute.

- Today, after a year, this is no longer just an idea, but a serious project and European Commission’s support is very important to us. We discussed concrete measures and instruments on how the Commission could support the project, i.e. its second phase, which implies the development of a technical and business plan and we are happy that we have received open support from the Commissioner and the European Commission, Minister Damjanović said.

The members of the delegation were also Prof. Jürgen Debus, Medical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology and Radiation Therapy at Heidelberg University Hospital, Prof. Herwig Schopper, initiator of the SEEIIST project idea and former long-time director of CERN, and Milena Milunović, First Secretary in the Mission of Montenegro to Brussels.

Later this afternoon, Minister Damjanović will participate at the meeting of the Western Balkan Science Ministers, which is also held in Brussels.
