Podgorica, Montenegro (28 June 2018) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković noted that Montenegro’s membership in NATO, in the company of the most developed countries that inherit the imperishable democratic standards, will permanently bind Montenegro and the United States together, adding he is hopeful that the US support for the Western Balkans, which is crucial for long-term stability of the region, will remain high on the agenda in Washington.

"There are many reasons why this year seems special when it comes to the relations between Montenegro and the United States. In addition to the significance of the jubilee of celebrating the signing of the Declaration of Independence, as a symbol of the American democracy, Montenegro has celebrated at the beginning of this month the event that provided us with a place among the most developed countries and nations of today that inherit imperishable democratic standards and values, that is, the anniversary of our membership in NATO. The same principles, values and ideals we will be fighting and advocating for will permanently bind us together," Prime Minister Markovič said addressing the reception hosted by Ambassador Margaret Ann Uyehara at the US Embassy on the occasion of the anniversary of the independence of the United States.

The Prime Minister said that NATO membership represents a new potential for both the State and the citizens, that Montenegro’s economy is growing with a stable positive trend, and that long-term progress also implies the rule of law, democratic standards and fundamental freedoms.

"Twelve years since the restoration of statehood, Montenegro has implemented a lot of reforms, but still more needs to be done. EU remains our strategic priority to which we are fully committed. We are grateful to the United States for providing us support along this path and for understanding our priorities and needs. The road to the EU is complementary to our vision of the society and values. Although this is a difficult and demanding road, there is no doubt that we will succeed," Prime Minister Duško Marković pointed out.

He concluded by stating that last year's visit by US Vice President Mike Pence to Montenegro showed an unambiguous US commitment to the stability of Montenegro and the Western Balkan region.

"United States’ support and the transatlantic link remain crucial for the long-term stabilisation of the Western Balkan region. I am convinced that it will remain high on the priority agenda of our allies," Prime Minister Duško Marković highlighted.
