PM Marković: Summit in London fulfills Montenegro’s expectations

Podgorica, Montenegro (18 July 2018) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković noted earlier today in the Parliament of Montenegro that the last month’s summit in London fulfilled the expectations of Montenegro.

"The London Summit has also announced a significant increase in the financial support the United Kingdom will provide to the Western Balkans through various bilateral programmes and within the Berlin Process. Montenegro has developed successful cooperation with the United Kingdom and is pleased with their commitment to stability and the European perspective of the region, which they confirmed together with the leaders of the EU members. I want to emphasise the importance this Summit has given to our country, by acknowledging all the efforts and activities we have taken with our partners in the European Union. Montenegro is especially motivated to become a frontrunner in the accession process, strengthen the dynamics and achieve the set goals from the integration agenda, as evidenced by the summit in London," the Prime Minister noted answering the question by Miodrag Vuković, MP, from the Democratic Party of Socialists of Montenegro.

Prime Minister Marković underscored that the Berlin Process has already proven to be one of the most significant and most successful initiatives that prepares the Western Balkan countries for the EU membership, and that, in parallel, it establishes more effective cooperation between the countries of the Western Balkan region.

"Following this year's successful EU-Western Balkans Summit in Sofia under the Bulgarian chairmanship, which also covered topics complementary to the Berlin Process, the London Summit relied on the results achieved and continued accomplishing the basic objectives of the initiative. Economy, security issues, as well as good neighbourly relations and heritage issues, took central stage at the summit. We are grateful to British hosts and Prime Minister May on the broad vision of this Summit, and a clear projection of how all these issues are linked and necessary for a better future of the Western Balkans. There is a need for a more resolute engagement in all outstanding issues in the region, and we consider it a common success that declarations on war crimes and missing persons have been signed. This is equally significant as the agreements signed on economic or security issues, which included the promotion of regional economic cooperation, fight against corruption, exchange of information on terrorism, organised crime and the strengthening of cyber capacities. Furthermore, the improvement of cooperation and progress depends on facing each aspect of life that can be a burden on the stability of the region and the development of good neighbourly relations," Prime Minister Marković underscored.

The Prime Minister particularly highlighted the benefits Montenegro has of the Berlin Process.

"Montenegro, as one of the most successful participants in the Berlin Process, has already experienced benefits of this process. And the London Summit fulfilled our expectations. An important part of his success is the vision of further development of significant initiatives, especially when it comes to young people. The UK hosts have announced an increase in the financing of digital skills in the region, which will be particularly important for the youth and their opportunities to respond to the challenges of contemporary market demands. Youth associations and civil society organisations played an important role at the Summit in terms of defining approaches to prevent emigration of young people and increase employment in the region," the Prime Minister underlined.

The Prime Minister of Montenegro reiterated that a significant number of topics at the summit related to young people, and that he has sent a letter to German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other Western Balkan leaders to support the project of the Institute for Sustainable Technologies in South East Europe, which can have transformational potential for the region, and therefore for young people and professionals in science and research.
