Montenegro committed to fulfilling closing benchmarks for several chapters

Montenegro is committed to fulfilling closing benchmarks in chapters related to innovation, human resources, information society and social policy. We are determined to maintain a good dynamics of implementing reforms and meet standards of the most developed countries in Europe, said Montenegro`s Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljević.

He opened the eighth meeting of the Subcommittee meeting on Innovation, Information Society, and Social Policy between Montenegro and the EU in Podgorica today.

Participants discussed activities and upcoming key obligations and plans in Chapter 2 - Freedom of movement for workers, Chapter 10 - Information society and media, Chapter 19 - Social policy and employment, Chapter 25 - Science and research, and Chapter 26 - Education and culture.

Drljević recalled Montenegro`s efforts towards meeting standards needed for EU membership, stating that 31 negotiation chapters that were open and 3 provisionally closed demonstrate success of the reforms. “I would like to point out that Montenegro is committed to fulfilling closing benchmarks for the chapters covered by this Subcommittee”, said Drljević.

Deputy Head of Unit for Montenegro, DG NEAR, European Commission, Barbara Jesus-Gimeno, said that the negotiation process is not just about opening and closing chapters, but the hard work and commitment of both sides.

She pointed out that since the last year`s meeting of the Subcommittee, visible progress has been made in all areas, even though there is more work to be done in upcoming period.

“We congratulate Montenegro on the progress it has made since last year`s Subcommittee meeting. There are challenges remain, for example in Chapter 2 in the context of freedom of movement, in Chapter 10 on audio-visual media services, in Chapter 19 in the area of unemployment, and in chapters 25 and 26 when it comes to education”, Jesus-Gimeno said.
