New York, the USA (27 September 2018) -- Prime Minister Duško Marković said today at the United Nations that chronic non-communicable diseases (NCD) cause globally almost 80% of the population's mortality and that this trend is rising, and that the Government of Montenegro has adopted a number of strategic documents dealing with this issue with the aim of solving this problem. Montenegro has created an institutional mechanism to confirm the determination to provide an effective response to the problem of chronic non-communicable diseases.

"In my country, Montenegro, chronic non-communicable diseases have been recognised as a serious public health problem, and statistics show that people are most affected by cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes and respiratory diseases. Premature mortality from NCD, illness and related disability are serious generators of the growth of health care in the country" – the Prime Minister of Montenegro said at the third meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on prevention and control of non-communicable diseases in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Prime Minister Marković emphasised that the Government adopted several strategic documents dealing with this area and established the National Council for the Coordination and Prevention of Chronic Non-communicable Diseases in Montenegro.

"With this institutional mechanism, we have confirmed the determination to provide an effective response to the NCD epidemic" - said the Prime Minister.

PM Marković stressed that Montenegro initiated, within the Berlin Process, a consultation on the harmonisation of excise policies as an instrument for improving health and promoting a sustainable economy with the aim of looking at the possibility of harmonising excise policy in the region as an effective instrument for controlling the risk factors for the emergence of chronic diseases.

"I truly believe that investing in health is an investment in the sustainable development of our society. Likewise, I believe that investment in prevention brings a guaranteed dividend. It is a responsible attitude towards the health of our citizens and an approach to the sustainability of the health care system" – Prime Minister Duško Marković noted.
