New York, the USA (27 September 2018) -- Ministerial meeting of the US - Adriatic Charter (A5), hosted by Minister of Foreign Affairs of Montenegro Srđan Darmanović, took place earlier today on the sidelines of the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The meeting was organised within the Montenegrin presidency of the A5. Minister Darmanović said that Montenegro, in the capacity of the country's chairperson, as the youngest member of NATO, seeks to further promote the Open Door policy and encourages the exchange of experiences and the provision of political and practical support to the countries of the region in the integration processes.
"This year has brought new energy in the process of Euro-Atlantic, as well as European integration, and has encouraged development and cooperation within regional mechanisms," Minister Darmanović stressed.
He said that the countries with observer status have also made significant contribution to the very successful functioning of the US - Adriatic Charter.
"The participation and contribution of our observers - Serbia, Slovenia and Kosovo - is particularly valuable, they provide a truly regional dimension to this forum."
The head of the Montenegrin diplomacy also said that the very intensive cooperation agenda confirms that the A5 remains a very important mechanism for strengthening cooperation in the area of security, but also an additional incentive to the European perspective of the Western Balkans.
"Today, we have here representatives of the A5 member states, three of which are already in NATO. Macedonia has recently been invited to start accession negotiations. I am hopeful that it will soon become the 30th member of the Alliance and I believe that this significant progress on the Euro-Atlantic path will contribute to the positive outcome of the upcoming referendum. The results we achieve show that the A5 successfully fulfills the mission defined by its establishment," the Foreign Minister of Montenegro underlined.
He concluded by saying that during its presidency, but also afterwards, Montenegro will remain fully committed to the US-Adriatic Charter agenda, equally promoting the values of the North Atlantic Alliance and working closely with its neighbours, thus contributing to regional stability and progress.
