Italy is strongly committed to the enlargement policy and the European future of the Western Balkan countries. Italy sees Montenegro as a future full-fledged member of the Union and is ready to provide all political and expert support in achieving that goal, it was noted during the meetings that Chief Negotiator Aleksandar Drljević had in Rome.

The Chief Negotiator had meetings with the Deputy Director General/Principal Director for European Integration Fabrizio Bucci, Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the European Union Marco Peronaci, and Secretary General of the Adriatic and Ionian Initiative Giovanni Castellaneti.

The officials highlighted that the good results that Montenegro achieves in all areas of accession negotiations are the basis for accelerating negotiations.

The Chief Negotiator pointed out that, given the current challenges facing the EU, for the future of the EU and the stability of the continent, it is very important to show that the European perspective of the Western Balkans is certain.

He also stressed the importance of evaluating the individual achievements of each of the candidate countries, and in this context, pointed to Montenegro's readiness to open two remaining chapters, as well as to close several negotiating chapters. On the basis of good results, Montenegro, as a leader in the European integration process, deserves adequate support in order to accelerate accession negotiations, Drljević noted.
