Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Policy and Financial System and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Milutin Simović met today with Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Montenegro Robert Weber.

DPM Simović pointed out that Montenegro will continue to contribute to the development of strong and friendly relations with the Federal Republic of Germany. Simović thanked Germany for the strong support that it has so far provided to Montenegro.

Although at the beginning of the integration process everything seemed demanding, extensive and complex, Montenegro became a member of NATO, opened 31 chapters in EU membership negotiations, substantially harmonised its legislation with the European, strengthened administrative capacities and successfully used pre-accession funds for financing projects that contribute to overall development, DPM Simović noted.

The messages that come from Germany on the European perspective of Montenegro are very encouraging, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed.

Simović said that Germany's messages are very important for the Western Balkans and are encouraging further steps in integration processes. Montenegro especially appreciates the influence of the Berlin Process on significant projects for the entire region.

On the other hand, Montenegro expects that the results it achieves in meeting standards and the benchmarks in the negotiation process will be valued. Montenegro expects positive outcome when it comes to opening chapter 27 – Environment and Climate Change. We also expect positive reports on chapters 23 and 24, DPM Simović said and emphasised that, regardless of the outcome, Montenegro will not stop the reforms because it does not see fulfillment of the EU standards as a condition for membership, but above all as a need of Montenegro and all citizens.

Germany will continue to be a partner to Montenegro in overcoming challenges on its remaining path to the EU membership, Ambassador Weber confirmed. Montenegro belongs to Europe in the political, economic and cultural aspect, the Ambassador said and thanked for all the efforts that Montenegro is undertaking in pre-accession negotiations.

Reforms are needed within the EU, but they must not stop the enlargement policy. The process of reforms and the process of further enlargement of the Union must take place in parallel, Weber said.

DPM Simović and Ambassador Weber also discussed the intensification of cooperation between the two countries in the area of investment, agriculture, tourism and trade.
