Activities with regards to the fight against organized crime and corruption, illegal migration, terrorism, regional and international cooperation, and financial and expert support measures by the European Union to our institutions were the main topics of the meeting between Interior Minister Mevludin Nuhodzic and the Head of the Unit for Montenegro in the General Directorate for Enlargement, Thomas Hagleitner.
On this occasion, the Minister informed his interlocutors that this year, in the field of combating organized crime, through intensive regional and international cooperation, significant results were achieved, and that this positive trend was recorded in the previous year, 2017, and more successfully continued in 2018. In this regard, as the Minister pointed out, as a result of joint efforts, we note a greater number of arrests of members of organized criminal groups, seizures of narcotics and other illegal substances, as well as prevention of various criminal acts, and said that this trend will continue consistently in the future.
The interlocutors also discussed cases of attacks on journalists, and on this occasion Minister Nuhodžić repeated the message that they remain a priority in the work of the police and the prosecution, and that as long as there is at least one unresolved case, the intensity of the activities will not be reduced until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
The topic of the discussion between Nuhodžić and Hagleitner, who is staying in Podgorica on the occasion of the meeting of the Subcommittee on Justice, Freedom and Security, included activities planned for the coming period, such as improving the capacity to conduct financial investigations, as well as continuing the implementation of the sectoral budget support project for integrated border management, for which the European Union has allocated eight million euros last year, and the signing of an agreement with the European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders (FRONTEX), which should be implemented soon.
In addition to these projects, it is of particular importance to support the rule of law that the European Union provides through its experts in the EUROL and TAIEX projects, and through capacity building it is expected that the focus of activities will be on achieving the most effective results in the coming period, as it was concluded at the meeting.
