Podgorica, Montenegro (18 December 2018) -- Foreign ministers of the member countries of the US-Adriatic Charter( A5) noted earlier today at a meeting in Podgorica that Montenegro successfully completed its one-year chairmanship of the Charter.

A5 foreign ministers stressed that this year has introduced new energy into the Euro-Atlantic and European perspective of the region.

Minister Darmanović pointed out that the US-Adriatic Charter is one of the most important regional mechanisms for cooperation in the field of security and integration, which has been proven during Montenegro's presidency of the Charter.

One of the most important events during the Montenegrin presidency of the Charter was the invitation sent to Macedonia to start accession negotiations with NATO in July, said Montenegro's Foreign Minister. He emphasised that Montenegro was committed to promoting Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the countries of the region and actively helping to implement the reforms and fulfill the criteria for their membership in NATO. The discussion was focused on the current security situation, regional cooperation and future priorities of A5.

Today's meeting adopted the Joint Declaration confirming the commitment to strengthening mutual cooperation and promoting further progress in Southeast Europe in the processes of European and Euro-Atlantic integration. The ministerial meeting was preceded by a meeting at the level of political directors of A5 member states.

Meeting of the foreign ministers of the US-Adriatic Charter is the final event sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs within the one-year presidency of Montenegro. Albania will take over the presidency on 1 January 2019.
